From Heaven to Earth
„Yesterday, in my dream a butterfly appeared…” – said Zhuangzi, sage from the East… ”… But today I don’t know, whether I am human being, who dreamt about being a butterfly, or whether I am a butterfly, who is dreaming that he is a human being…” By this parabola he illustrated the complex issue of opportunities and limits of knowledge. He also questioned about empirical potential for the humans. Similar questions asks Iwona Gilarska – the author and performer of her last spectacle “From heaven to earth…” Using the metaphor of the short life of a butterfly, dancer and choreographer compares its symbolism to the most important references of a woman’s life. In the performance “From heaven to earth…” woman-butterfly in the long process of maturity seeks to know her own frontiers as to the light. Iwona Gilarska considers the infinity of life and death, when after falling and rising again she is reborn. The psyche played important role in the performance. The author considers the relationship between emotion and intuition, happiness and pleasure, playfulness and freedom, carelessness and thoughtlessness, instability and transience. She seeks to absolute, which for her means to achieve a finished shape of humanity, however briefly, as in the life of a butterfly, only for the fleeting moment. In the intricacies of vanity and trifling it just seems to be the most important value for her. Anthony de Mello said that the butterfly is as happiness. A man chasing him, and he plays with him escaping. When the tired man sits quietly, happiness just sits on his shoulder itself. In Iwona’s Gilarska opinion the secret lies in the simplicity of the elections.
